10/7/09: OUTspoken: featuring Keith Boykin
Keith Bokin will give a talk titled “One More River to Cross: Black and Gay in America” as part of the Outspoken Lecture Series. Boykin, editor of the Daily Voice online news site, is a frequent contributor to CNBC, CNN and MSNBC. Educated at Dartmouth and Harvard, Boykin served in the White House as a special assistant to President Bill Clinton. In addition to hosting a BET program, he is the New York Times best-selling author of three books “One More River to Cross,” “Respecting the Soul” and “Beyond the Down Low: Sex, Lies and Denial in Black America.” Boykin’s presentation will focus on the experience of African American gays and lesbians, the oppression they face and the political and social change possible if these two communities work together. 7:00 p.m. in McKnight. A book signing and reception will follow the lecture.
11/16/09: $tart $mart Salary Negotiation Workshop
One year out of college women earn less than their male counterparts. One of the reasons is women are less likely to negotiate their starting salaries. $tart $mart teaches women the skills and information necessary to successfully negotiate their salaries when they enter the workforce. 2/3/10 Screening of the documentary Pray the Devil Back to Hell
Winner of the best documentary at the Tribeca Film Festival in 2008 Pray the Devil Back to Hell chronicles the story of courageous Liberian women who came together to end a bloody civil war and bring peace to their country. Thousands of women, both Christian and Muslim, came together to pray for peace and then staged a silent protest outside of the Presidential Palace. Armed with only white T-shirts and the courage of their convictions, they took on the warlords and non-violently forced a resolution during the stalled peace talks. Free dinner served at 6:00, film starts at 6:30 in Afterhours in the Cone University Center. Sponsored by the Feminist Union, UNIFEM, the Women’s and Gender Studies Program, and the Office of International Programs.
3/1/10: An Evening with Gloria Steinem (yes, the Gloria Steinem)
Join us to hear feminist icon Gloria Steinem on March 1 at 7:00 p.m. in McKnight Hall. This talk is free and open to the public. Tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis.
